OUR
NAME
Our
full name, San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles
Rivers and Mountains Conservancy, is a mouthful,
so we more often use the shorter name, Rivers
and Mountains Conservancy, as well as the abbreviation,
RMC.
The full name deserves an explanation. The adjacent
map, which shows the RMC's boundaries, should help.
The boundaries and the
name were the result of negotiations that produced the
legislation which created the RMC. The entire watershed
of the San Gabriel River plus the lower Los Angeles
River are in the RMC's territory.
Although they're not
mentioned in the conservancy's name, portions of two
other rivers are also included in the RMC's area. They
are the upper portion of the Santa Clara River and a
short portion of the lower Santa Ana River.
Of note, there are other organizations which have names similar to ours. An example is the San Gabriel Mountains Regional Conservancy, a non-profit organization.
